Abstract:

This study addresses the issue that traditional markets face in this modern time, particularly in Indonesia. By examining previous literatures discussing the traditional marketplace, the research suggested that there were four major categories of problems that bear down upon the current condition of traditional markets in Indonesia. To further dissect the problems faced by traditional market merchants, we have constructed a value flow map to assess the health of the business ecosystem of traditional markets. We argue that immediate actions must be taken to maintain the presence of traditional markets in the country. We have managed to produce several posits to be tested through empirical studies. We also have provided several tentative suggestions that might be useful for future policymakers, to improve the managerial mechanism that is suitable to help sustain traditional markets in Indonesia.
